Cancer Research UK Centre Visit and Tour

  • Birmingham University Medical School Vincent Drive Birmingham, England, B15 2SG United Kingdom (map)

Join WiBA’s 3rd visit to see cancer research in action at the University of Birmingham where we will learn about current amazing work and tour some of the labs. In the years since our last visits, much has changed. Our awareness of science via programmes may make laboratories feel familiar but here’s an opportunity to see the real thing and meet some of the many people researching cancer on our doorstep.

Many of us have been impacted in some way by cancer, as a patient, relative, colleague or friend. Recent media coverage of Dame Deborah James, presenters, celebrities and Royal Family mean it is more openly discussed by some yet awareness can always be improved. Many of us have taken part in fundraising challenges like Race for Life, Shine, Stand Up To Cancer etc to support cancer research, share the camaraderie of such events without knowing what happens to those funds and where investment is made.

The University of Birmingham’s ‘Birmingham In Action’ campaign includes a focus on global health, helping to improve prevention, earlier diagnosis and better treatment, and turn pioneering research into life-changing solutions.

Birmingham leads ground-breaking research work in many different areas including cancers for children, young people and adults and coordinates national and international studies featuring various treatments and approaches. Technological improvements including genomics are just some advances resulting in more personalised treatment approaches and research into many other aspects. Join us for an insight into their work, see some of the facilities and meet those involved.

This event will take place at the University of Birmingham Medical School where drinks and refreshments will be available on arrival, for WiBA’s usual friendly networking, brief talks by a key cancer researcher and staff on their vital work, what progress is being made, lab tour and Q&A/networking to round off the evening.

This event is open to members at a cost of £20 and guests at £25.
